Entrepreneurial e-mentoring
Irja Leppisaari from Finland and Kari Korpelainen from Estonia co-presented on how e-mentoring models can be used in entrepreneurship education, linking business experts and higher education (HE) students and teachers. The research was based on pilots in the Central Ostrobothnia University of Applied Sciences (COU) in Finland and Tallinn University (TLU) in Estonia.
Accept yourself
Acceptance Commitment Therapy/Training, a variation on CBT, is increasingly being used in coaching, particularly in Australia and New Zealand, said ACT practitioner and psychologist John Groom. He said, “In ACT, you don’t deny (troublesome thoughts), you don’t use CBT to fight (them). ACT is about learning the nature of the mind.”
He continued: “ACT is about accepting who we are… It has two goals: effectively handling painful emotions, thoughts, feelings and images, and creating a rich and fulfilling life.”
Make talk count
Support staff in the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) benefit enormously from informal coaching and mentoring, according to research by former NHS employee Rachel Hawley. Support staff, which include administrative staff, porters and kitchen staff, make up 50 per cent of the NHS’s workforce. Change consultant Hawley’s research suggests there is more scope for people to engage in learning in informal coaching conversations.
