Much of the literature informing resilience programmes is drawn from experiences outside organisational life. Resilience at work has received far less attention, so this book is welcome.
However, its rich value comes from Jackson’s learning after being caught in the devastating 2011 Christchurch, New Zealand earthquake, and from her work as a peak performance coach with the Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team. Its remit was to grow resilience to support leaders’ capability to deliver a $2 billion rebuild project with the challenges of uncertainty, a tight timeframe and no financial incentives.
While written as a self-help book for those facing challenges such as reduced job opportunities, or potential or real redundancy, the materials will support coaches working with such issues.
Its Resilience Foundations Framework synthesises research findings into the foundations of Emotional Honesty, Self-Care, Connecting and Learning.
Embedded in each chapter are multiple case studies sharing how leaders were coached to remain resourced – equally relevant to less traumatic situations.
The intended readership will no doubt go straight to the chapter(s) relating to their needs. But many coaches will read it all because it supports our work and extends our understanding of resilience.
