The British Psychological Society (BPS) and publishers Wiley have joined forces in a mentoring initiative to help early career researchers build their reviewing skills.

In addition to helping early career researchers build reviewing skills, the Early Career Researcher (ECR) Reviewer Mentoring Programme will support their career development, enriching their research knowledge and capabilities. In turn, this will support the field of psychology research as a new generation of reviewers develop expertise.

The programme will provide these researchers with the opportunity to train as a peer reviewer under the guidance of an experienced mentor on one of six journals in the BPS portfolio. The journals taking part are: British Journal of Developmental Psychology, British Journal of Health Psychology, British Journal of Social Psychology, Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology, Legal and Criminological Psychology and Psychology and Psychotherapy: Theory, Research and Practice.

The programme also plays an important role in the BPS’s commitment to support early career researchers and promote diversity and equitable opportunities in psychology.

Debra Malpass, BPS director of knowledge and insight, said: “I am delighted to announce this important new initiative with our journal publishing partner, Wiley. I encourage early career researchers in the fields covered by the journals in the scheme to apply. The scheme offers initial training in best practice in peer review and on-going, one-to-one support from an experienced mentor.”

The application deadline for the current set of ECR reviewer training opportunities is Friday 9 September 2022.
