Career coaches are more likely to work on a package than hourly basis, with the median package rate charged at £1,105 / $1,401 and average package rate at £1,475 / $1,870, finds research by career coach training company Firework Coaching.
Some 23% charge an average rate of £0-500 / $0-634 for a career coaching package, 29% £501-1000 / $636-1267, 16% of £1001-1500 / $1268-1901, 14% £1501-2000 / $1902-2535, 5% £2001-2500 / $2536-3168 and 12% £2501 plus- / $3169 plus, according to the 2024 International Career Coach Landscape Report, produced with career author and strategist John Lee.
The data was drawn from surveys conducted in 2023 and 2024 with 423 career coaches, across 50 countries and six continents. Most been working as a career coach for 1-5 years.
The 2024 report highlights significant changes that have occurred since the 2022 report was published.
The median hourly rate charged by career coaches is £110 / $139; the average hourly rate is £137 / $174. The median highest hourly rate charged by career coaches is £172 / $218; the average highest hourly rate is £272 / $345. The highest hourly rates charged have risen, with 54% of respondents charging £151-£301+ in 2024, compared to 35% of respondents in 2022.
Nearly two-thirds of career coaches’ income comes from individuals versus organisations, although the number of respondents working with organisations has risen by 8% in 2024, compared to work sourced from individuals in 2022.
The use of social media channels to source clients has risen by 10% in 2024 (to 44% compared to 34% in 2022). The use of word of mouth, referrals, and recommendations has fallen by 9%; and the use of a website has fallen by 6%, compared to 2022 (from 12%).
Online is the most popular way to work with clients (96%). Although 50% do coach face to face, fewer people are currently working face to face (down 6%) and over the phone (down 11% in 2024 to 27%) than they were in 2022.
